| The Great Salt Lake Desert Valley |
- The Goshutes lived in the desert region southwest of the Great Salt Lake. Scientists believe they migrated from Death Valley in California to the Great basin about 1000 years ago. The word Goshute means "people of the dry earth." The name makes sense because they live in one of the most arid places in North America.
- Even though they lived in a difficult place to grow crops they were great hunters and gatherers. They used the resources wisely by providing for their needs without destroying their land. They had over 81 species of vegetables. They harvested and used many of the seeds from these crops.
- The Goshutes have both benefited and suffered from their desert homeland they settled in. The harsh desert climate and conditions provided some protective barriers from Manifest Destiny and the migration of the white settlers. But the Spanish settlers of New Mexico raided the Goshute often.
- The major white settlements began in the 1850's with the arrival of the Mormons. Permanent settlements were starting to begin in the Goshutes native lands. Along with the Goshutes, the near by Ute indians were also being invaded and forced from their homeland.
- Now days there are bands of Goshutes living in Skull Valley and Deep Creek.
